What is Self Levelling Screed and How Does it Work?

Self levelling screed is a popular flooring material used to level uneven or imperfect floors. This versatile compound is designed to produce a smooth and level surface suitable for the installation of various types of flooring such as tiles, carpets, vinyl, and wooden floors. But what exactly is self-levelling screed, and how does it work?

In this blog, we will dive into the world of self levelling screed and explore its composition, properties, and application techniques. We will also take a closer look at Tacktile’s Self Levelling Screed, including mixing instructions, surface preparation and general application information. Let’s get started!

Different types of self levelling screed

There are several different types of self-levelling screed available on the market, each with its own unique properties and advantages. Here are some of the most common types of self-levelling screed:
  • Chemical-based: strong and durable, for both residential and commercial floors with heavy foot traffic.
  • Gypsum-based: lightweight, with a smooth finish, for leveling out uneven or sloping floors in residential settings.
  • Anhydrite-based: high strength and durability, commonly used in commercial and industrial settings to create a smooth surface for flooring installation.
  • Epoxy-based: chemically resistant, ideal for high-traffic areas in laboratories, factories, and warehouses.
  • Polymer-based: flexible, durable, and resistant to cracking and shrinking, commonly used in sports halls and dance studios.

What is Tacktile Self Levelling Screed

Tacktile’s Self Levelling Screed is a chemical-based compound with high strength and quick setting properties, engineered specifically for levelling imperfect floors. When applied correctly to properly prepared surfaces, it produces an even, smooth, and hard underlayment suitable for a variety of modern floor coverings such as tiles, carpets, vinyl, and wooden flooring.

Mixing Instructions

To achieve the best results with Tacktile’s World Class Self Levelling Screed, it is essential to follow the proper mixing instructions. The following steps will guide you through the process:
Step 1: Gradually add 20kg of Tacktile Self Levelling Screed into 4.4L of clean cold water.
Step 2: Mix the components to a creamy, lump-free slurry consistency, using an electric paddle to ensure a homogenous mix.
Step 3: Allow the mixture to stand and settle.
Step 4: Re-mix the mixture for a further 2-3 minutes at a low speed.
Step 5: Use the mixture within 10-15 minutes. If the product thickens, do not add more water. Instead, stir it thoroughly to extend its pot life.

Following these instructions will ensure that the self-levelling screed mixture is well-prepared and ready to be applied to the surface in need of levelling. It is important to note that the mixing process should be done with care and precision to achieve the desired consistency and avoid any potential issues during the application process.

Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is a crucial step when it comes to applying the World Class Self Levelling Screed from Tacktile. To ensure the best results, it is important that the floor to be screeded is thoroughly prepared beforehand. The surface should be dry, clean, and free of any dust, fungus, or dampness. Any fungi present should be removed, and the spores killed with the use of an effective fungicide. A dilution of household bleach is sufficient for this purpose.

If the surface is very smooth, it should be etched with an acid wash and rinsed thoroughly with clean water. This will help to ensure that the screed has a good grip on the surface. In addition, the use of a primer and/or bonding agent such as Tacktile Bonding Liquid can act as a pore sealer and greatly enhance the prevention of possible air bubbles forming. It is important to allow the surface to dry completely prior to screeding.

Application Information

The product can be applied between 2mm and 8mm thick depending on the level of the unevenness of the existing substrate.

To apply, start by pouring the self levelling screed onto the floor and allowing it to flow and fill the application area. Then, use an extended trowel to work the product into a smooth surface. Further rolling of the screed with a spiked roller is recommended to remove excess air and increase its density. This will improve surface smoothness and increase the screed’s compressive strength.

For applications thicker than 10mm, apply a coat of Tacktile Bonding Liquid, allow it to dry, and then apply the next layer of screed. All structural or movement joints should be identified prior to application and maintained by saw cuts through the dried screed. Allow the screed to completely dry for 24 hours before surfacing it with the desired finish.

Final Thoughts

Self levelling screed is an excellent solution for levelling uneven or sloping floors. With the right materials and techniques, it’s easy to mix and apply self levelling screed to create a smooth and even surface that is suitable for laying tiles, wooden flooring or carpets.

Tacktile Self Levelling Screed is a popular choice for those looking to level imperfect floors quickly and effectively. This high-strength, quick-setting compound is easy to mix and apply, producing a smooth and hard underlayment that is ideal for a range of applications.
